The Android Show #42 ($2276.31 Raised For Breast Cancer Research!)

What can I say? Last night, something truly magical happened. It was one of those moments when I am reminded exactly why I am involved with Android and the people surrounding it. A truly inspirational event that shows how much we’ve grown from just a community to a family. We were very proud to host our 2nd Annual Breast Cancer Awareness Auction and Fundraiser where our viewers donated a total of $2276.31.
When myself and Andrew Krug sat down to plan the event, we asked ourselves what our goal would be. Last year, we raised $1000 to donate… but this year was different. We had more devices, better devices, more stuff, and a larger audience. Andy said to me, “I’ll be happy if we get $800″. Oh ye of little faith… I challenged him to hit $1500. Looking at the items we had to auction off I was fairly confident that we’d hit my goal. Boy, were we both in for a surprise.
Typically our broadcasts on Wednesday nights follow a fairly strict format and time schedule of about an hour. Frequently we run over a bit, and I make concessions for that in the way that we record the show. I block the maximum amount of time that Blog Talk Radio allows for being a premium member (2 hours), and uStream will allow up to three hours of continuous recording. We honestly thought that the two hour limit that BTR gave would be plenty of time to reach our goal… but, things changed and we surpassed that goal early in the broadcast.
The entire broadcast ended up at right around the four hour mark. So, when you go back to watch the show archive… you’re going to miss the last 25% of the show. Unfortunately, that was the best part… when the chat room was packed and urging us to keep going. We are glad we did, because in that last hour we raised an additional $600 over what we would have if we stopped when planned.
We started the evening with one of my favorite videos concerning the subject matter of the nights show; chuckles and giggles ensued from all. Directly after that we had the extreme pleasure of announcing our very special guests for the night.
^^OBVIOUSLY NOT SAFE FOR WORK^^
Part of the evenings festivities concerned some special donations from the Girls of Geek calendar crew. We were very excited to have long time Android friend SassiBob and uber-hawt geekus maximus Kristen Nedopak join us on camera… and oh boy, I am thankful that we have the ability to have video calls. Both ladies spoke about their current projects, history being a geek, and what the future holds for them. Highlights of the interview? Talking about the ladies shirts… wow. It’s been awhile since I’ve blushed like that.
After the interviews we got into the meat of the show: the fundraising auctions. We had a few corporate sponsors that graciously donated items to be auctioned off, and I implore you to purchase from them… mention them, and even go out and thank them on Twitter personally for donating items.
T-Mobile for donating a Sensation 4G – Twitter
Jabra for donating two bluetooth earpieces and two bluetooth speakers – Twitter
Seidio for donating three charging vaults – Twitter
Android Beanie for donating three beanies – Twitter
Swiftkey for donating ten licenses to Swiftkey X – Twitter
Swype for donating tshirts and foam fingers – Twitter
RerWare for donating five licenses to My Backup Pro – Website
Dynamix for donating two licenses to Printer Share – Twitter
Girls of Geek for donating three calendars, one of which is signed by every model – Twitter
A very special shout out and thank you needs to go to a few individuals as well for their donations.
Jeff “Azrienoch” Smith for graciously donating an Evo 3D near the close of the auction.
Deth Becomes You for donating his time and talent to “zombify” an Android beanie for the auction.
A giant thank you to the following individuals who donated cash without bidding on anything. Some of them were given prizes as a way to thank them for their donation, but they gave freely without specifically bidding on a particular item.
Kyle Sandler from The Droid Guy
Steven Richards
AmaSan25 from Tee Hee Media Productions
Julio Duverney
Eric Hauth
One other person that deserves a giant amount of heartfelt thanks is my business partner and friend, Andy Krug. Without his help, there is no way we could have pulled this off. He worked diligently with sponsors to get them on board and helped keep everything organized during the broadcast.
So that’s it! It was an amazing night of charity and fun! I can’t show my appreciation enough to everyone that was involved. Everyone was amazing. This will be the last fundraiser we have for some time however… likely until October next year. This amount combined with the money we raised during our Autism auction adds up to almost $4000 in charity donations this year. Pretty gosh darn good, if you ask me.
